So I know this is a few days late but that couldn’t be helped since I had to work till almost 11 pm on Sunday. So here is my reaction to this years Oscars. The 84th Academy Awards.

I love Billy Crystal, I have ever since I saw him in Princess Bride. But ugh George Clooney…though seeing him kiss Billy Crystal was hilarious. Every year the intro to the Oscars always makes me laugh but the ones with Billy Crystal almost makes me fall off the sofa laughing. I love film montages because it gives the audience a little bit of all kinds of movies and then some.  You gotta give the man props for agreeing to host again, his 9th time, because the man is a genius not only as an actor but as a person.

He’s so right, movies have always been there during the good and the bad in the world and its escapism at its best.  Though Crystal can’t beat Neil Patrick Harris when it comes to singing or even Hugh Jackman. I do love the set of the stage for the show because it feels like a mix of old Hollywood and New Hollywood. Which is exactly what this film year has been a mix of films that take place in all time periods and even a nod to the old black and white films.

First award and presenter for the night. Tom Hanks who looks even older with that beard of his. He makes me think of a general of some kind. First award is for Cinematography and it goes to Robert Richardson for Hugo. I’m not gonna lie this guy looks like a former hippie with his long white hair. The Oscar for Art Direction goes to Hugo again won by a husband and wife team. I’m not even going to attempt to spell their name because I’ll probably get it wrong. Listening to them thank Martin Scorsese is kinda touching, especially since he looked like he might cry because of them thanking him.

Yay another film montage, one that I have seen almost all of the movies in it except maybe the one should remain nameless. God I’m a movie addict and I’m glad to share it with everyone.  The great thing is that so many of this films are what my childhood was based on and I loved seeing them being saluted here.

Ugh Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez. Why are they doing the costume award? Love them talking about Edith Head since my mother is a huge fan of her and I’m hoping for Anonymous or Jane Eyre to win it.  BOOOOOOOO. Mark Bridges won for The Artist. I mean yes it is a period piece but not the kind that I wanted to win. I always feel like real period pieces from films that didn’t take place in the past 100 years should win because that really shows the detail of work and study someone goes through in research. It’s kinda easy to design costumes when the movie takes places within the last 100 years over one from 500 years ago. Next yup is the Oscar for achievement in makeup. I know how hard make up can be when you’re doing it for play at school, so I have the utmost respect for the people who do it for feature length films. The winner is Mark Coulier and J. Roy Helland for The Iron Lady. I probably could have done without Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez during that weird turn thing though.

Oh man listening to the actors talk about their experience with movies is amazing and moving and inspiring. What they are saying is what I have always believed and what I’ve dreamed about.  Movies are an escape, movies are creation, movies are the ability to change someone’s life or inspire them. Movies help make the world seem like a better place to live.

Oh Sandra Bullock looks amazing and beautiful and was she speaking German or Chinese? Oh well. She’s presenting the best foreign language film. Ever since I was in Israel I have a bit more of an understanding on how their films are done and a bit more respect for their film industry. A Separation won from Iran.  Part of me wonders how them winning this award is going to affect the people of Iran. Here’s hoping.

Oh Christian Bale….you’re so pretty. And presenting the award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Why I love these awards? Because as he said, four of the five woman are first time nominees and are all amazing actresses and are being saluted for it.  Who is Octavia Spencer sitting next to?  YAY for Octavia Spencer!!!! I love her and she was amazing in The Help. Oh she’s making me tear up with her because of how amazed and freaked out she is for winning. She totally deserved winning and I’m so glad she won.

Love the fake test audience for Wizard of Oz was hilarious. Especially since I’m sure that there have been real test audiences just like that.

Tina Fey and Bradley Cooper, who needs to shave his facial hair, are up to present the Oscar for Film Editing and the award goes to Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall for Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Congrats to them for winning again for the second year in a role and gotta love short and sweet thank yous. Now the award for Sound Editing. The Award goes to Philip Stockton and Eugene Gearty for Hugo.  I need to see that movie!! Have I mentioned I love watching the people behind the scenes that get awards because yay for saluting not just the actors or directors. The Award to Sound Mixing goes to Tom Fleischman and John Midgley for Hugo.

Oh Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy!! I’m so glad the Muppets are making a come back because its about time my nephews generation got to see the awesomeness that is the Muppets.  Oh WOW. The Cirque Du Soleil performance of what its like to go to the movies is amazing and stunning.  Okay the light and George Clooney’s eyebrows was creepy.  That entire performance was amazing and crazy and fantastic and wow.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Robert Downey Jr. oh how funny you are together.  Gotta love how they set up for the presentation for Documentaries, whose winner was Undefeated and T. J. Martin, Dan Lindsey, and Rich Middlemas.  The three of them look like they are high school students….huh? Okay now I need to go google this movie/documentary and find out what it is all about because I am totally lost.

Its been a long time since I saw Chris Rock doing something.  I wonder what happened to him? Oh he is still as funny as ever, gotta love him and his sense of humor. Love that he’s presenting for best Animation film and the Oscar goes to Rango. YAY!!! Gore Verbinski and his movie Rango wins for best Animated film and I gotta say again YAY!!! Especially since Johnny Depp was in and amazing as usual.

Oh Melissa McCarthy. Oh Emma Stone and Ben Stiller. Lol I can’t stop laughing at them. He just looks so stoic and she’s ridiculous.  Gotta love how she somehow gets all the movies in her speel and at the same time a slight dig at Ben Stiller. I love that they keep showing Jason Issacs because I may or may not have a slight crush on him.  And the award for Visual Effects goes to Rob Legato, Joss Williams, Alex Grossman and someone else for Hugo.

ugh Melissa Leo. I really don’t like her but she seems a lot more tamer this year. This year’s best supporting actor nominees are all amazing and I really don’t know which one I would want to win more. Though part of me kinda wants Kenneth Branagh to because he’s amazing and I adore him. Yay for Christopher Plummer wins for The Beginners and is the oldest actor to win an Oscar at 82. Standing ovation for this amazing actor and he will always be Captain Von Trapp to me.   Oh man I’m so happy that this amazing actor is finally being recognized for his amazing talent and his acceptance speech was so amazing and touching. Making his wife cry for him thanking her.

Oh Billy Crystal you make me laugh so much. I’m so glad you hosted the Oscars again. Even when you’re trying to keep a straight face and can’t do it.

Time for the music awards. With Penelope Cruz and Owen Wilson presenting them and wow does she look amazing in that dress. I love hearing the original scores that these composers create for films because when you hear them you can almost see exactly what part of the movie is happening.  That just proves what talent and gift these composers are giving to the audiences. The Oscar for Best Original Score goes to Ludovic Bource for The Artist. Here is a man who has no former training what so ever and it just shows what one can achieve when they try.

Have you seen a stranger pair of presenters then Will Farrell and Zack Galifianakis? Gotta say they are hilarious together and one can’t hlep but giggle. So there are only two songs for Original Song and I really want the Muppets to win. YES!!!!! Brett McKenzie wins the Oscar for ‘Man or a Muppet’ which was one of my favorite parts of the movie because it made my nephew grin so big to see Jim Parsons singing.

Dude Billy Crystal asking the front row to buy the Dodgers kinda just made the moment because damn that would be awesome if they did.  And he’s right Angelina Jolie is the original girl with the tattoos. Her pose when presenting adapted screenplay is a little odd and except for being a bit thin, she looks amazing. The Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay goes to Jim Rash, Alexander Payne, and Matt Faxon for The Descendants. Love the writers mimicking Angelina Jolie’s pose.  Next up is the Oscar for the Original Screenplay and I’m kinda ambivalent about almost all of them honestly. Congratulations to Woody Allen for A Midnight in Paris, I wonder why he wasn’t there to accept it.

Milla Jovovich is presenting an award? I don’t think I’ve ever seen her at an award ceremony though I love her dress. She did the award that they always end up presenting off site for those responsible for advancement in film making.

Gotta love the cast of the Bridesmaids presenting an award and such pretty dresses that they are all wearing. Oh man penis jokes at the Academy Awards….can’t wait till I tell the girls at work about this. The first award they presented was Live Action Short Film for The Shore done by a father and daughter team.  Second was for short documentary and I love how Rose Bryne and Melissa McCarthy took a shot on stage when someone yelled Scorsese. Not sure why but it was still hilarious.  The winner for Short Documentary was Saving Face. Final award was for short animated short and the winner is The fantastic flying books of Mr. Morris Lessmore. Love that the guys who did that movie called themselves swamp rats from Louisiana.

Oh Michael Douglas going the award for Best Director? Huh interesting. He looks a lot healthier then he did last year and not as sickly. I’m pretty sure the winner is gonna be the guy for the Artist and I’m right. Michel Hazanavicius wins for Best Director for The Artist. At least he’s honest for admitting that he has forgotten his speech and part of me wants his to break out into French to finish his speech. You’ve got to hand it to the Academy for loving a film that is a salute to all silent films.

How amazing of an actress is Meryl Streep? She has been nominated for an Academy award 17 times and even though she’s only won twice, you have got to salute this amazing woman. Her dress is so very blingy and gold. She introduced the highlights of the Governer’s Ball where they honored James Earl Jones, Oprah, and Dick Smith with honorary Oscars.  And the audience stands to applaud and salute these amazing people for all their amazing work and dedication. You know why? Because they deserve it.

And now its time for the In Memory part of the show where they salute the people who have passed away this past year. Having someone sing ‘What A Wonderful World’ while showing those who have passed is going to make me cry. Oh man I’m already tearing up and then they had to show Peter Falk saying ‘As You Wish’.  And what a way to end it with showing the ever memorable and ever amazing Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra. Excuse me while I take a moment to draw my eyes.

Oh yea I totally still have a crush on Edward Norton. Every time I see him on the film montage of actors I can’t help but go ‘Oh yea, his still a hottie’

Oh Natalie Portman what are you wearing? Love the jewerly she is wearing though. Alright every time they do a close up on her, I’ll admit I like it a little bit more. She doesn’t do a very good job of hiding the fact she is reading from a teleprompter.  How has Gary Oldman never been nominated for an Academy Award? He is beyond amazing. I’m still a little crushed that Michael Fassbender isn’t there because he is another amazing actor that deserves to be acknowledge his talent.  All I gotta say is I hope George Clooney doesn’t win. The Oscar for Best Actor goes to Jean Dujardin for the Artist. Brava! I’ll admit that he is very suave and good looking. I can’t wait to see what he does next.

Colin Firth how I adore you. I love you. And everything you say sounds so amazing because of your accent. I do love all the ladies nominated for best actress well except maybe Rooney Mara but I’m not going to get into my opinion of her right now. I love how Colin Firth introduces Meryl Streep with referencingMamma Mia because I do love them in that film together. If I had to chose I would want Meryl Streep, Viola David, or Michelle Williams.  Oh I love Meryl Streeps response. She looks all shocked and was like ‘WHAT!’ and I love the standing ovation she got and the people yelling ‘Yea’ because she totally deserves it.  I gotta say it must have been fate that she won because the last time she won was about 30 years ago and she wore a gold gown that night as well.

Why is Tom Cruise presenting Best Picture? I’m kinda surprised that he was picked but I’m a lil surprised about how good looking he looks. I love how they meshed all nine films into an amazing montage to show why these films have been picked.  So what picture is going to go down in history as the best picture? The Artist. Hollywood and the Academy has saluted The Artist for a Frenchman’s take on Hollywood and silent films.  But I gotta say Brava for a film being filmed entirely in Los Angeles.

I gotta say I loved Billy Crystal hosting. He was funny and entertaining and he helped make the night memorable. The film montage of actors explaining about the films they love, acting, and so forth was amazing and wonderful. The orchestra was amazing as ever and I loved how there was various areas for them to play music.  Was it the best Oscars ever? No but it was highly entertaining and I loved watching it.

This is going to be my post on the announcement of the Oscar Nominees and how I feel about it. I will do another update on the status of award season in the next few days promise.  They announced the nominees for the Oscars very early Tuesday morning. How do I know it was very early Tuesday morning? Because my cousin was telling me about having to be there at like 5 am. Anyway here you go the 2012 Academy Award Nominees are as followed:

Best Picture:

The Artist, Thomas Langmann, producer
The Descendants, Jim Burke, Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor, producers
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close,  Scott Rudin, producer
The Help,  Brunson Green, Chris Columbus and Michael Barnathan, producers
Hugo,  Graham King and Martin Scorsese, producers
Midnight in Paris,  Letty Aronson and Stephen Tenenbaum, producers
Moneyball,  Michael De Luca, Rachael Horovitz and Brad Pitt, producers
The Tree of Life,  Nominees to be determined
War Horse,  Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy, producers

So every year the Academy decides its gonna fiddle with how the Best Picture films are going to be picked, going from 5 to 10 and now to some weird way of figuring it out due to votes and popularity and blah blah blah. I say blah blah blah because honestly it sounded like a complete bunch of bullshit when I was trying to figure it out. ANYWAYS I’ve only seen one of these movies at the moment though I am trying to change that. I can’t help but feel like there are a few movies here that shouldn’t be and at  least one that should and isn’t (Shame).  My vote for this category is gonna probably be delayed because again I need to see more than one of these movies to actually have an opinion.

Best Actor in A Motion Picture:

Demián Bichir, A Better Life
George Clooney, The Descendants
Jean Dujardin, The Artist
Gary Oldman, Tinker Tailor Solider Spy
Brad Pitt, Moneyball

Okay I’m kinda pissed about this category this year because again where is Michael Fassbender?!?!?! He is such an amazing actor and yet he isn’t even nominated where as George Clooney who doesn’t do anything but be himself is nominated?!?!?! WHAT!!!! UGH! Sorry I just have this huge thing against George Clooney because I don’t really think he is this amazing actor that everything thinks he is. He is still the same guy who played Doctor Ross on ER and hasn’t really changed. My pick is probably gonna have to be either Jean Dujardin or Gary Oldman honestly. Even though I adore Brad Pitt I just can’t seem them giving this to him, sorry Brad.

Best Actress in a Motion Picture:

Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs
Viola Davis, The Help
Rooney Mara, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady
Michelle Williams, My Week with Marylin.

I’ve seen two of the five films listed here and bits and pieces of one of them. I’m slightly confused as to why Rooney Mara is on this list and something tells me she won’t win because of all the trash talking she has been doing but still confused why she’s here. I loved Viola Davis in The Help and it would be pretty awesome if she won it. BUT I also kind of want Michelle Williams to win it because she is an amazing actress herself and even though I’m not much of a Marylin fan I think she has done an amazing job as her.

Best Director:

Michel Hazanavicius, “The Artist”
Alexander Payne, “The Descendants
Martin Scorsese, “Hugo
Woody Allen, “Midnight in Paris”
Terrence Malick, “The Tree of Life

Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture:

Kenneth Branagh, “My Week with Marilyn
Jonah Hill, “Moneyball”
Nick Nolte, “Warrior
Christopher Plummer, “Beginners”
Max von Sydow, “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close

So this is a hard category for me to pick someone I want to win because I really like three of the actors that have been picked. Though I can’t help but root for Kenneth Branagh because he is one of my favorite people ever.  Plus he directed Thor and has done a lot for Shakespeare on film. Its interesting to see this group of actors though because they range from young to old, newer actors to long time veteran actors. I think its gonna be really interesting to see which way this award goes

Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture:

Bérénice Bejo, “The Artist”
Jessica Chastain, “The Help”
Melissa McCarthy, “Bridesmaids
Janet McTeer, “Albert Nobbs”
Octavia Spencer, “The Help

When I first saw Melissa McCarthy she was Sookie in Gilmore Girls and I loved her, but I hated the movie Bridesmaids. Whereas I loved the movie The Help and would love to see Jessica Chastain or Octavia Spencer win this award. Especially since they play almost opposites of each other in the film what with Chastain being the outsider who hires Spencer since she needs help fitting into society and with the house. The hard part for me is to take Janet McTeer seriously because every time I see her all I see is either Mrs Dashwood from the PBS Sense and Sensibility or Mrs Protheroe from Miss Marple: Murder at the Vicarage. Neither role really inspires me into believing that she is that great of an actress but who knows? Maybe I’m wrong.

Best Adaptation of a Screenplay:

The Descendants,” Alexander Payne and Nat Faxon & Jim Rash
Hugo,” John Logan
The Ides of March,” George Clooney & Grant Heslov and Beau Willimon
Moneyball,” Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin. Story by Stan Chervin
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” Screenplay by Bridget O’Connor & Peter Straughan

Best Original Screenplay:

The Artist,” Michel Hazanavicius
Bridesmaids,” Annie Mumolo & Kristen Wiig
Margin Call,” J.C. Chandor
Midnight in Paris,” Woody Allen
“A Separation,” Asghar Farhadi

This is gonna be an interesting category to see who wins. The top two contenders are probably going to be Bridesmaids and The Artist but I wouldn’t mind seeing something else win. Maybe A Seperation?

Best Animated Feature Film:

“A Cat in Paris,” Alain Gagnol and Jean-Loup Felicioli
Chico & Rita,” Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal
Kung Fu Panda 2,” Jennifer Yuh Nelson
“Puss in Boots,” Chris Miller
Rango,” Gore Verbinski

I’m not gonna lie, I’m kinda surprised with this list and part of me can’t figure out why. I feel like there is a movie missing from here and I have no idea what it is. Which movie am I rooting for? Rango of course!

Best Foreign Film:

Bullhead,” Belgium
“Footnote,” Israel
“In Darkness,” Poland
Monsieur Lazhar,” Canada
A Separation,” Iran

Best Documentary Feature Film:

Hell and Back Again,” Danfung Dennis and Mike Lerner
“If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front,” Marshall Curry and Sam Cullman
Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory,” Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky
“Pina,” Wim Wenders and Gian-Piero Ringel
Undefeated,” TJ Martin, Dan Lindsay and Richard Middlemas

Best Documentary Short Film:

The Barber of Birmingham: Foot Soldier of the Civil Rights Movement,” Robin Fryday and Gail Dolgin
God Is the Bigger Elvis,” Rebecca Cammisa and Julie Anderson
Incident in New Baghdad,” James Spione
Saving Face,” Daniel Junge and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy
“The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom,” Lucy Walker and Kira Carstensen

Best Animated Short Film:

Dimanche/Sunday,” Patrick Doyon
“The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore,” William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg
La Luna,” Enrico Casarosa
A Morning Stroll,” Grant Orchard and Sue Goffe
Wild Life,” Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby

Best Live Action Short Film:

Pentecost,” Peter McDonald and Eimear O’Kane
“Raju,” Max Zähle and Stefan Gieren
The Shore,” Terry George and Oorlagh George
Time Freak,” Andrew Bowler and Gigi Causey
Tuba Atlantic,” Hallvar Witzø

Best in Art Direction:

The Artist,” production design: Laurence Bennett; set decoration: Robert Gould
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2,” production design: Stuart Craig; set decoration: Stephenie McMillan
“Hugo,” production design: Dante Ferretti; set decoration: Francesca Lo Schiavo
Midnight in Paris,” production design: Anne Seibel; set decoration: Hélène Dubreuil
War Horse,” production design: Rick Carter; set decoration: Lee Sandales

Best Cinematography

Guillaume Schiffman, “The Artist”
Jeff Cronenweth, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Robert Richardson, “Hugo”
Emmanuel Lubezki, “The Tree of Life”
Janusz Kaminski, “War Horse”

Best Costume Design:

Lisy Christl, “Anonymous”
Mark Bridges, “The Artist
Sandy Powell, “Hugo
Michael O’Connor, “Jane Eyre
Arianne Phillips, “W.E

As much as I loved Jane Eyre and Michael Fassbender as Mr. Rocherster, I’m rooting for Anonymous to win this category. I loved the movie when I saw it with my mother and honestly the costumes and the scenery were beyond amazing. Besides its a Tudor England film and the Tudor historian in me would be ever so devastated if it doesn’t win.

Best in Film Editing:

The Artist,” Anne-Sophie Bion and Michel Hazanavicius
The Descendants,” Kevin Tent
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall
Hugo” Thelma Schoonmaker
“Moneyball,” Christopher Tellefsen

Best in Makeup:

Albert Nobbs,” Martial Corneville, Lynn Johnston and Matthew W. Mungle
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2,” Nick Dudman, Amanda Knight and Lisa Tomblin
The Iron Lady,” Mark Coulier and J. Roy Helland

I think it will be pretty amazing if Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 doesn’t win. Both Albert Nobbs and The Iron Lady are more realistic films then Harry Potter and part of me can’t help but want the fantasy film to win.

Best in Original Score:

The Adventures of Tintin,” John Williams
“The Artist,” Ludovic Bource
Hugo,” Howard Shore
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” Alberto Iglesias
War Horse” John Williams

This is going to be an interesting award to see who wins. John Williams has two film scores up for nomination and well I love the work of John Williams but then there is Howard Shore. Howard Shore did the score of The Lord of the Rings movies and I love the music for the films. I haven’t heard the music of the other two composers so I can’t really comment on them but part of me can’t help but feel like it might be a two composer race.

Best Original Song:

“Man or Muppet” from “The Muppets,” music and lyrics by Bret McKenzie
“Real in Rio,” from “Rio,” music by Sergio Mendes and Carlinhos Brown; lyrics by Siedah Garrett

When I saw the Muppets it was with my nephews, brother and mother. The film was fun, entertaining, and brought back many memories of a childhood filled with the Kermit, Miss Piggy and so many others. I would love it if the song ‘Man or Muppet’ wins just because the song really is kinda amazing. Not to mention when my youngest nephew and I saw that Jim Parsons was the voice of muppet well that kind of sealed it.

Best in Sound Editing:

Drive,” Lon Bender and Victor Ray Ennis
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” Ren Klyce
“Hugo,” Philip Stockton and Eugene Gearty
“Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” Ethan Van der Ryn and Erik Aadahl
War Horse,” Richard Hymns and Gary Rydstrom

Best in Sound Mixing:

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” David Parker, Michael Semanick, Ren Klyce and Bo Persson
Hugo,” Tom Fleischman and John Midgley
“Moneyball,” Deb Adair, Ron Bochar, Dave Giammarco and Ed Novick
Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” Greg P. Russell, Gary Summers, Jeffrey J. Haboush and Peter J. Devlin
“War Horse,” Gary Rydstrom, Andy Nelson, Tom Johnson and Stuart Wilson

Best in Visual Effects:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” Tim Burke, David Vickery, Greg Butler and John Richardson
Hugo,” Rob Legato, Joss Williams, Ben Grossman and Alex Henning
Real Steel,” Erik Nash, John Rosengrant, Dan Taylor and Swen Gillberg
Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” Joe Letteri, Dan Lemmon, R. Christopher White and Daniel Barrett
Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” Scott Farrar, Scott Benza, Matthew Butler and John Frazier

So as  you can tell I’ve written my own little commentary to some of these announcements. I’ll probably post who I will like to win closer to Oscar time. I’ve tried not to make this into an entry about who I feel may have been shunned by the Academy but you never know I may write one later on.
